Understanding coverage for naturopathic care

Extended Medical Coverage

Naturopathic medical services are not covered by the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP). However, most extended medical plans provide coverage for office visits and laboratory service fees. Check with your insurance provider to determine if you are eligible for coverage.

Please note: Livstil Wellness does not directly submit to insurance companies and therefore requires full payment at the time service is rendered. Please save your receipts from your visits for submission to your provider.

Claiming Naturopathic Expenses on Your Tax Return

Generally, eligible medical expenses (such as visits and laboratory services) can be claimed for any 12-month period ending in the current tax year that were not claimed in the prior tax year. The medical expenses claimable include those paid for the taxpayer and their dependents. In cases where medical expenses are reimbursed by an insurance plan, the portion not reimbursed can be claimed.

Please note: Natural medicines are not claimable, but pharmaceutical prescription medications are. For details on allowable medical claims, please refer to the Canada Revenue Agency guidelines.

Self-Employed Health Spending Plans

Many insurance providers are limited in their naturopathic coverage. If you are self-employed, a Health Spending Plan may allow you to tax-deduct your eligible healthcare costs. We recommend speaking with your accountant or benefits provider to see whether this option is right for you.
